LARGER GROUND NEEDED

NORTHERN A. AND P. ASSOCIATION ANNUAL SOCIAL EVENING HELD ON SATURDAY “This association and representatives of all sports bodies in Rangiora should meet with a view to getting a larger, well-appointed ground that will be suitable for all the bodies concerned, ’ said the president of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr E. S. Taylor), at the annual social evening which was held in the association s hall at Rangiora on Saturday. . Agricultural and pastoral associations were most necessary, said Mr Taylor, not merely from the competitive standpoint, but with a view to providing better stock. Every association needed the support of the general public, who could help by attending the annual shows. ~ TT Among the visitors were the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes and Mrs Forbes, Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P., and Mrs Williams Mr W. Parsons (president of the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association), and Mr W. A. B. Reed (president of the Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Association). The following toasts were honoured during the evening:—“ Parliament,” Mr H, A. Bennett—the Rt, Hon. G. W. Forbes and Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P.; “The Ladies,” Mr L. S. Carpenter—Mrs C. Mclntosh and Miss T, Peach: “Agricultural and Pastoral Associations,” Mr E. D. R. Smith —Messrs W. A. B. Reed and W. Parsons; “The Press,” Mr D. Anpleby—Mr R. G. A. Logan; “The Performers.” Mr R. Macdonald —Mr C. J. Smith. Items were given by Miss M. Nelson, Messrs J, Cox, C. J. Smith. E. D. R. Smith, H. L. Spark, R. L. Clark, and R Macdonald. Accompaniments were played by Mrs H. L. Spark. Cups and medals won during the last year were • presented by Mrs E. S. Smith, presided at a summoned meeting of the Loyal Good. Intent Lodge, held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Akaroa. Correspondence was read from the District Secretary enclosing an account for levies and goods. PENINSULA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OINKAO SHIELD COMPETITION Playing on the Recreation Ground, Akaroa, on Thursday, Akaroa Old Girls beat Little River B by 7 goals to 4. Miss Ena Woodill was referee. The Little River A team beat the Akaroa High School team on the school ground on Thursday by 19 goals to 9, in a fast game. Miss S. Brown was referee. The visiting players were entertained to tea at the pavilion. KAIAPOI CHESS CLUB MEETING The president, the Rev. T. M. Curnow, presided at the annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Chess Club held m the Foresters' Hall, Kaiapoi. The annual report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a small credit, were received and adopted. The following offlcers were elected: Patron, Mr A. Gordon; president, Mr W. Hart; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. Miles; auditor, Mr G. G. Parkins; committee, Messrs A. Gordon, HThornley, and J. Storie. A unanimous vote of thanks was accorded Mr W. TEMPERANCE UNION AT KAIAPOI The president (Mrs A. Stocking) presided at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. A talk on the constitution of the society was given by Mrs Hall, president of the New Brighton branch. AMURI COLLIE CLUB A committee meeting of the Amuri Collie Club, held in the Culverden Hail, was presided over by Mr A. V. Baker, in the absence of the chairman, Mr W. J. McMillan. The secretary reported that entries for the forthcoming trials on June 6, 7, and 8 were coming in well. It was decided that the committee meet at 8.30 a.m. on June 3 at the grounds to put the grounds in order for the trials. RANGIORA PERSONAL NOTES Mr R. Mr and Mrs H. H. Brooker, "Sdiedale." Medbury, arranged an enjoyable dance held in the Public Hall recently to celebrate the marriage, of their daughter, Miss Una Brooker to Mr R. Dalzell. A pleasant time was spent In dancing to music played by Mrs G. Ginders, Messrs B. Begg, J. Rydmgs. K. Brooker. and J. Beath. with extras by Mrs D. McKay CHurunui), Miss Belle Gray (“The Peaks”), and Mr T. McKay. Novelty dances were held. The winners of the lucky spot waltz were Mrs S. Scott (Mason’s Flat) and Mr E. G. Dalzell and the Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss McKnight i Cheviot) and Mr R. . Honeybone. Messrs Karl Brooker and Noel Brooker were masters of ceremonies.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES HAPUKU Mrs W. Wilson presided at the monthly meeting .of the Hapuku Women’s Institute. The secretary was instructed to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs W. Vaughan in her illness. It was decided to send a delegate to the federation conference to be held in Wellington. The roll call was “The Task I Like Best on a Wet Day.” Winners of competitions were:— Knitted article: Mrs R. Dalzell gave an account of the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Federation in Christchurch. Mrs J. Beath- won a competition. Competitions resulted as follows; Hot water bottle cover, Mrs E. Denne 1 Mrs C. S, Brooker 2; best bloom, Mrs F. Busch and Mrs Philpott (equal) 1, Mrs J. Gilbert 2. Hostesses for afternoon tea were Mrs E. G. Dalzell and Miss Grace 1 alzell. AKAROA The eighth birthday party of the Akaroa Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, and was highly successful and enjoyable. There was a representative gathering of nearly 300 persons from Akaroa, as well as visitors from Duvauchelle, Barry’s Bay, Le Bon’s Bay, Okain’s

Bay, Little Akaloa, and Little River Women’s Institutes, and Chorlton and Pigeon Bay Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Miss Mabel Jacobson, president of the Akaroa Institute, welcomed the guests. Miss E. Le Lievre presented Miss Jacobson with a posy made by Mrs I. Pilkington. Dancing and a musical programme, arranged by Mesdames I. Pilkington and C. Petterson, were enjoyed. Songs were sung by Mrs C. Dalbeth, Mrs H. Johnson, and Mr J. Read. Mrs I; Pilkington and Miss Elsie Keegan were accompanists.' Mr Max. Gilbert, Little Akaloa, sang two Maori songs, with Miss Merle Gilbert as accompanist. Two musical comedies were presented, one by Mesdames D. J. Narbey, I. Pilkington, R. S. C. Stewart, and Miss Patricia Kearney, with Mrs C. Dalbeth as'soloist, and another by Mesdames D. Narbey, R. S. C. Stewart. W. B. Ramsay, and Miss P. Kearney, with Mrs H. Johnson as soloist, Mrs C. Petterson was stage manager, assisted by Mr E. Galt. Mr W. E. Brown was master of ceremonies, and Messrs W. H. Priest and J. Le Lievre as doorkeepers. Music for dancing was played by the Revellers’ Band- (Le Bon’s Bay), and extras by Mrs Pilkington. After supper, the president cut the birthday cake, with its eight candles. A meeting was also held by representatives interested in the Peninsula Drama Festival. It was decided to hold the festival, which'will take place at Akaroa this year, early in August, further arrangements to be made Later. Miss Nina Oed, honorary secretary of the Akaroa Drama Circle, agreed to act as secretary.
