SUMNER BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING HELD The Mayor of Sumner, Mr J. E, Tait, presided at the annual meeting of the Sumner Beach Improvement and Beautifying Association. The annual report showed that, with the assistance of the borough engineer and the curator of the Botanic Gardens, the garden plots and reserves were being maintained. The balance-sheet showed subscriptions £8 4s and donations £4 17s 6d. There was a credit* balance of £24 16s 4d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs T. B. Boulton (president), S. K. Bassett (secretary), W. V. Siddall (treasurer), and the other officers of the society were re-elected. It was decided to ask Mr G. Harper to act as honorary supervisor of the reserves. . Mr H. J. Marriner outlined the progress being made with the cherry avenue. The council was favourable, and it was hoped to secure most - of the trees by donations. The prizes won in the garden competitions were presented by the Mayor, Mr W. B. Brockie gave an illustrated lecture on native plants, emphasising their use for both external and interior decoration, and dealing with those varieties most suitable for the Sumner district.
