PRONUNCIATION
TO TBB BUITO* TBl fBKBS Sir, —Certainly the pronunciation of some of our announcers is not perfect, but let us give them their due. Marlborough should be pronounced “Mawlborough”; this is perfectly correct. Many New Zealanders make suit rhyme with loot, which is both hideous and incorrect. The nearest can get to spelling the sound is “sewt." not “suet.” The Oxford Dictionary gives interlude as “interlood,” and waltz as “wawlse.” To go to absurd extremes is affectation and accent-phobia: but the words quoted by your correspondent are ordinary King's English.— Yours, etc.. „ , ENGLISH.
