OPARARA RIVER CONTROL
LARGE GRANT MADE BY GOVERNMENT A grant of £7OOO for river control works at Oparara, Karamea, has been made by the Government, with the provision that the settlers furnish land and timber to carry owt alterations ana additions and indemnify the Bullei County Council against any damage to land. ft is understood that some settlers have offered to supply timber. Tlie land required consists of strips along the river bank, and the Indemnity to absolve the council from responsibility for damage would bo similar to that given by Karamea settlers on the bar* hour works. MAGISTRATE’S COURT AT WESTPORT Michael John O’Neil was charged at Westport yesterday, before Mr E. «• Fox, J.P.. with incurring a debt of £2l 3s J>d in Christchurch on February last by obtaining credit by fraud. He was remanded to appear in the Magistrate s Court, Christchurch, on May 11. Charles Goodyer and A. J. Ford, both of Westport, were convicted and fined 5s on charges of drunkenness. The Denniston Rowling Club’s rinks championship was won by R. Cunragn, Q. Hosklnx A. Burt, and H. Smith <s>They beat A. Rattray, J- Black. J Allan, and-J. Fairlie (s) m the final.
