ELECTION FOR LOCAL BODIES

KEEN INTEREST IN BULLER DISTRICT Interest in the local body elections at Buller has increased in the last few days with the publication of various aspects of the Labour candidates’ policies and those of other canndidates. The Westport Borough Council election promises to be very keen, with a full Labour ticket opposing the pregent council, Labour candidates are also contesting seats on the Buller Hospital Board and County Council. Independent candidates are opposing sitting members on the council, making three-cornered contests for some ridings. There is also considerable speculation about the result of the statutory half-holiday question in Westport and the county council’s road improvement and council chambers loan proposals. DENNISTON MINERS’ UNION The following have beSh nominated as officers of the Denniston Miners’ Union: —President, Messrs D. Hayward, C. Smith, and F. Nelson; secretary, Mr H. Smith (returned unopposed); executive, Messrs W. Meek. W. Fleming, and P. Nelson (coalbrookdale mine), D. Edmunds, H. King, and H. Hayward dronbridge mine). Mr J. Caldwell was appointed mechanics’ representative, Mr T. Richardson delegate to the Buller Labour Representation Committee, and Mr D. Edmunds delegate to the Buller Central Commute*.
