ONLY MEN’S SENIOR MATCHES PLAYED

TECHNICAL LEADS IN COMPETITION

UNIVERSITY BEATS SYDENHAM

Because of the wet state of the grounds all hockey, other than men's senior matches, was postponed on Saturday. The grounds, d* Hagley Paris were in bettor order than was expected, and all three games were keen and interesting. Because of the postponement of other sports fixtures there was a fair crowd of spectators. Technical made a great recovery In the second half of the gamp against SelWyn and after being one goal down at half-time wen hy five goals to two. The match between Redcllffs and Trinity ended in a draw with one goal each. Neither side was at fnU strength, hut the game provided glimpses of fast, clever hockey. University secured its first win by defeating Sydenham hy four goals to one in a clean, fast game. Technical Is now leading for the championship, half a point ahead of Trinity and Selwyn, with Redcllffs half a point away in fourth place. The following table shows the positions of the teams:—

TECHNICAL (a) v. SELWYN (2) The first half of the game was fairly even and ended tn Selwyn's favour by two goals to one. In the second half Technical played with more dash and vigour and registered four goals, securing a win hy five goals to two.

Selwyn made the pace in the opening stages of the game, and quickly invaded Technical's circle, where a scramble ended in Wormald netting with a push shot. Seir wyn 1, Technical 0. . .. Selwyn dominated the attack for a while, but solid defence by C. Rogers and J. Anderson Kept Technical's goal clear, and finally Technical forced Selwyn back. Technical opened the second spell with dash and vigour, the forwards sweeping down on Selwyp's goal in a concerted rush. A tussle in Selw.vn's circle gave A. A fpst and very willing game that was marred by tpo much bpstling and indiscriminate hitting ended in a drew, with one goal each. Neither side was at full strength, Redcllffs being without a goalkeeper and losing E. Radcliffe halfway through the first spell. Trinity had a full team; buf four players were from the Junior ranks.
