CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION

VISIT OF INDIAN TEAM

The cost of arranging a match between the Canterbury Association and the Indian team was discussed at length at the meeting of'the management committee of the Canterbury Hockey Association held last evening. Mr L. L. Smith drew attention to the charges made by the Victory Park Board of Control, pointing out that the board of control asked for a percentage of the gross gate before the amusement tax naa been deducted. He said it looked as if the Hockey Association were paying amusement tax on money that was being paid to the Board of Control. He recommended that the attention of the Board of Control should be drawn to this. It was considered that because of increased wages and charges the cost of the match would be greater than that of the previous match in 1935, and it was possible that an increased charge at the gate would be necessary. The chairman (Mr C. H. Franklin) said the Victory Park Board of Control should be waited on so that the charges for the uso of the ground could be discussed. Messrs C. H. Franklin, A. L. Graham, and J. L. Squire were appointed to wait on the Board of Control. Proposed Increase In Ground Fees Mr L. L. Smith submitted a report of the sub-committee which attended the meeting of the Reserves Committee which dealt with the proposed increased charges for sporis grounds on the city reserves. The report stated that 75 per cent, of the male hockey players were under 21, and that as the Hockey Association provided hockey free for primary school players and at a very small rate for secondary school pupils, the burden of any extra cost would have to be borne by the association, which possessed no ground at which a charge could be made, and therefore had no revenue from gates. The report recommended that the council be asked to hold the matter in abeyance until the Government's scheme for the assistance of all sports W9s finalised. The Air Force Club's request for a postponement of its match against Trinity next Saturday was granted. The application of the Technical College for the use of four grounds at Hospital Corner on Wednesday afternoon was referred to the grounds committee.
