COLLEGE THANKS ITS BENEFACTORS

ANNUAL UNIVERSITY CEREMONY

Commemoration day, the day set apart in the college year for expression of gratitude to benefactors, was observed at Canterbury University College last evening. Students, staff, and friends of the college assembled in the college hall to attend thp formal ceremony and to hear an address by Dr. C. Coleridge Farr, F.R.S.; Emeritus Professor of Physics, on “Lord Rutherford of Nelson: In Memoriam.” Mr C. T, Aschman, chairman of the College Council, who presided, offered the thanks of the college to its benefactors, thanking not only those who had given gifts of money and books, but all who had .supported the work of the college and extended its influence. All who were present then stood while the registrar, Mr C. C. Kemp, read a list of the principal benefactors in recent years. Tftie benefactors included the following:—

The Carnegie Corporation of New York, £4900 from 1934 to 1938 for continuation of extension work in rural districts; and £2009 from 1934 to 1938 for extension work. '

The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, annual gifts.from 1925 to 1938 totalling £ISOO for the upkeep of the economics department. The late Mrs A. M. E. Mickle, who bequeathed approximately £I7OO for the establishment of a Dr. A. F. J. Mickle student. loan fund for deserving students. Mr F. Wilding and Miss Cora Wilding, who gave a large number of volumes of music with a sum to provide for their binding. The late Mr Robert Bell, who bequeathed £SOOO for the establishment of travelling scholarships in journalism.

Dr. Farr then gave his address, paying tribute to the memory of Lord Rutherford, who was a student of the college in the earliest years of his scientific study. Dr. Farr was thanked for his address on the motion of Mr Arthur Sims, seconded by Dr. H. G. Denham.

Dr. Farr paid tribute to the generosity of Mr Sims, who has offered £SOOO towards a memorial to Lord Rutherford.
