In a balloon a man’s shout was heard at the distance of 1600 feet, the croaking of frogs in a marsh at 3000 feet, and the roll of drums and the music of a brass band at 4500 feet The notes of church bells could be heard clearly at 5000, and the sharp barking of a dog it 5900 feet. The sound of a rifle shot was audible at 6000, and the whistle of a locomotive at 10,000 feet
