AUTHORITY DEALS WITH GOODS LICENCES TWENTY APPLICATIONS HEARD Twenty applications affecting goods transport licences were dealt with by the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr T. H. Langford) yesterday. Eight of the applications were for new licences, 10 for amendment to existing licences, one was for transfer, and one for renewal. A licence for a continuous goods service from the Waikari lime works to a railway siding at Waikari was granted to B. W. Tremaine, of Christchurch. J. Mayo, Ltd., of Ouruhia, sought a licence for a goods service between the Clarence and Rangitata rivers. Mayo's counsel, Mr L. J. Hensley, said Mayo had been in business as a shingle carrier since 1911. He paid a monthly wage bill of £240 and appeared to be in a sound position. For three other operators, Mr C. E. Purchase asked that Mayo should be restricted to three trucks and should not be allowed to do day work for the Public Works Department. "You can be assured that it's a fairly difficult job to get a truck on public works to-day," said Mr Langford. Mayo was given three vehicle autnorities, for shingle and sand, to overrate between the Clarence and Rakaia rivers. „ . . G. Yellowlees, of Kaiapoi, was granted a licence to operate a general goods service within a five-mile radius of the Kaiapoi borough. He was also given one vehicle authority to cart shingle in a restricted area. E. J. O'Connor, of Le Bons Bay, was granted a licence to cart general goods within a five-mile radius of the Le Bons Bay post office, with an extension to the Summit road and a weight restriction of two tons.

To Cart for Public Works

G. Young, of Greta, was granted a licence to August 31 to cart road spoil and shingle for the Public Works Department, and F. C. Seyb, of Parnassus, was given a licence to cart for public works camps in. the Parnassus district. The licence of L. L. Cresswill. of Belfast, was amended to allow him to cart stock in Eyre, Ashley, and Kowai, south of the Kowai river.

J. W. Abernethy, of Cheviot, was granted an additional vehicle authority for carrying lime and manure in the Cheviot County. A licence to cart general goods for the Public Works Department from railway stations was granted to Kennedy Transport Services. Ltd., of Christchurch. An application for an additional vehicle authority was refused.

Authority to use a vehicle on South Island Main Trunk railway work until May 31, 1939. was granted to W. E. Creed, of Waiau.

Blackwell Motors, Culverden, were given \ authority to run an additional vehicle in the Amuri County for the cartage of lime, manure, and logs. A licence to collect cream in the Cheviot County was granted to T. E. Rapley. of Cheviot, but an application to cart lime and manure was refused. An application from K. G. McCaw, of Christchurch, to have the northern boundary of his area extended to the Conway river was granted for one vehicle. McCaw was authorised to cart metal and spoil outside the inner area when operating his own screener and conveyor on the job.

L. W. Lawrence, of Sheffield, was granted an additional authority to carry mails in Sheffield, Springfield, and Kowai Bush rural mail areas An application for the transfer of a goods service licence from W. E. Martin, of Kaiapoi, to J. W. Borrell, Kaiapoi, was granted. ' Decision Reserved

In each of the • following cases the authority reserved his decision: Application from T. E. Elliott, Christchurch, for amendments to his licence to allow him to work under contracts to carry monumental goods and tiles and to carry general goods ; in the Christchurch inner area; application from J. B Patterson, of Leeston, for permission to increase the weights of loads on two trucks; application from E. E. P. Williams. Christchurch, for renewal of his licence to operate a goods service in the Akaroa County and Wairewa County east of Little River, and of his route licence - from Eastern Bays to Christchurch; application from Smart and Sons, Hornby, for four vehicle authorities for the cartage of road materials, builders' and contractors* gear in Canterbury, and for the right to carry tractors in Canterbury for John Chambers and Son; application from V. G. Main. Waimairi, for two vehicle authorities to cart firewood, shingle, and clay in Canterbury.
