THE REV. DR. BINGHAM'S REMARKS
»• TIB BDITOB OF TBB VBBM. Sir,—Dr. Bingham is far nearer the truth than G. F. Seward, who understands "that the Italian Government required all missionaries of any denomination to be of Italian nationality," which is a mere excuse to cover up the fact that Protestant missionaries were deliberately expelled from Abyssinia. It it was not done at the Pope's order, it was carried out with his approval and sanction, in spite of the intervention and protests of the British Ambassador in Borne. Your correspondent also describes Dr. Bingham's remarks upon infalli-
bility as "provocative nonsense,' and states that Catholics believe "that God gives a very restricted measure of infallibility to His Vicar the Pope." The value of the statement and the kind of restriction will be appreciated when it is claimed, to quote the words of a Roman Catholic publication, that the Pope is infallible whea he speaks ex cathedra "of faith and morals, which include the whole content of Divine revelation." Your readers should note that the infallibility of the Pope is a comparatively modern doctrine, declared by the Vatican Councilin 1870, and it occurs in this way. The cardinals meet to elect one of their number as Pope, and hey prestol hejs made tafaEble immediately.—Ypurs. 5. 1938. __ H. RYAN.
