CONFERENCE OF FRENCH DIPLOMATS AIM TO REGAIN PRESTIGE IN EASTERN EUROPE i I (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT.) (Received April 6,2 p.m.) PARIS, April 5. For the purpose of discussing the strengthening of France’s influence in Eastern Europe to offset future German moves, the French Foreign Minister (M. Paul-Boncour) has summoned a conference of the French diplomatic representatives in Germany, Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Rumania.
Considerable important is attached to the conference, of which “1 "CEuvre” says; “France’s initiative has already produced an excellent impression in the Balkans, which is welcoming the rejuvenation of French foreign policy. Various recent signs of opposition to Hitlerism have shown the correctness of M. Paul-Boncour’s opinion that France could regain the upper hand. Hungary’s decision to resist German influence is significant.”

Why did Dr. Schuschnigg resort to the plebiscite which led to his downfall?
The former Vienna correspondent of the “Manchester Guardian” as a matter of historical interest, answers that Dr. Schuschnigg knew the idea behind Dr. von Inquart’s mission was that he should slowly prepare for a plebiscite. This, if cleverly manipulated and backed up by the necessary pressure, would yield a majority for Nazi Germany. Dr. Schuschnigg, to forestall this, decided to hold a plebiscite while a free vote for an independent Austria still was possible, but he counted without Herr Hitler.
AUSTRIAN CARDINAL IN ROME
TO DISCUSS POSITION OF CLERGY

ROME, April 5,
Cardinal Innitzer, arriving from Vienna, interviewed Cardinal Pacelli, Papal Secretary of State. He is expected to have an audience, with the Pope to-morrow. Officials of the Holy See emphasised that Cardinal Innitzer was not formally summoned to Rome, but his voluntary visit would afford a welcome opportunity to discuss the position of the Austrian clergy generally.
AUSTRIANS FOR FOREIGN . LEGION REFUGEES RECRUIT FOR SERVICE IN ALGERIA

The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” states that, comprised almost exclusively of Austrian refugees, a draft of Foreign Legion recruits, which has arrived a'. Sidi-Bel-Abbes, in Algeria, includes a former Vienna banker with an international reputation, and also the Roman Catholic priest who had preached against Herr Hitler.
