CLOSING OF TENNIS

SEASON

COMPETITION FINALS AT RANGIORA The official closing of the tennis season at Rangiora will take place during the week-end, when a small tournament will be arranged. ' The senior A team wal meet the sen ; or B team in the final of the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Associa-tion’s competitions on Saturday. A social evening and dance will be held next Tuesday. BASKETBALL IN NORTH CANTERBURY ELECTION OF OFFICERS AT ANNUAL MEETING The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Basketball Association; Patrons, the Rt. Hon. END OP ELLESMERE BOWLING SEASON

Many members of the Dunsandel, Southbridge. and Leeston Bowling Clubs assembled on the Leeston Club s green for the official closing of the season of the Ellesmere Association. The president of the association (Mr P. -F. Chamberlain) complimented the Leeston greenkeeper (Mr F, V, Gwatkin) and made him a presentation. Mr John Boag, patron of the association, presented prizes for the season as follows:—lnter-club competition, Dunshandel A team; champion rink (Boag Shield), Leeston; champion pair, G. M. Doyle and T. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, Kadapoi, was held before Mr H. A. Young, SAL Thomas Edward Daly, charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car, was fined £lO and ordered to pay costs. His licence was cancelled and endorsed, smd he was prohibited from obtaining a new licence until April 6, 1940. . Basil W. Ford, charged .with driving a motor-truck in the borough at a sliced more than 30 milts an hour, was fined £5 and ordered to pay costs. C. J. Higginson. charged with driving a motor-car and failing to keep to the left of the roadway, was fined £2 10s and ordered to pay costs. For driving a motor-car wubout holding a warrant of fitness, T. Erickson was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. . Hori Turin, charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, and with being In arrears of maintenance of £lB, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, to be released on payment of £lB, the warrant to be suspended so long as defendant pays 10s a week. At a sitting of the Juvenile Court, seven boys who were implicated in throwing stones and damaging a building at Ohoka were admonished and discharged, and the father of each boy was ordered to make restitution to the extent of £1 0s 3d. There was a good attendance at the opening of the Hororata Golf Club on Saturday on the Terrace Station course in ideal weather. The patron (Mr G. OPENING OF HAWARDEN GOLF CLUB The Hawarden Golf Club held its opening day on Saturday. A Canadian four ball bogey was played. W. Mason and Mrs F. Dalzell won from H. Fisher and Miss M. The president, Mr A. W. Leithead, presided. It was decided that No. 3 green be reformed and that the hole be lengthened by 20 yards. Further improvements to the course were postponed until an inspection is made by the Canterbury Advisory Committee of the New Zealand Golf Association. ELLESMERE GOLF CLUB \ OPENS The Ellesmere Golf Club opened its season in pleasant weather. The president (Mr J. T. B. Purser) welcomed new members. Mrs Purser drove the first ball. ; A competition, was won by Mrs E. W. Hunt and W. P. Sutherland.

GREENDALB GOLF CLUB OPENS The Greendale Golf Club opened its season recently.. There was a large attendance. A stroke handicap was played. C. A. Ridgen won the men’s competition. OPENING OF AMBERLEY GOLF CLUB The Amberley Golf Club was officially opened recently by Mr W. A. Parsons, who drove the first ball. A flag match then played was won by Miss Cushla Rutherford and W. J. Martyn. Mr A. A. Holland, who was president last year, announced that he would give a trophy to be competed for under similar conditions to the men’s Melbourne Cup. HANMBR SPRINGS HARVEST SERVICE A harvest festival service was held in the Church of Epiphany. Hanmer Springs, There was a good display of fruit and produce. The Rev. F. J. Daynes, vicar of Amur!, preached. Mrs J. Wilson was organist. NATIONAL PARTY AT KAIKOURA Mr J. Davidson presided at a meeting of members and supporters of the National Party in the Suburban Hall. Kaikoura. The chairman introduced Mr L. T. Bush, of Blenheim, who addressed the meeting on present legislation and the policy of the National Party. A vote of thanks was passed to the speaker, _ _

RETURNED MEN IN SPRINGS COUNTY

ANNUAL MEETING OF. t association

The annual meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association of the Springs County and surrounding districts, was held recently. The balance-sheet showed a substantial balance. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mr S. Ballard on the recent death of his father and to Mr S. M, Bray in the illness of his wife. Bon voyage was extended to three members of the branch. Messrs J. Woods. C. Howell, and W. Sbackel, who will leave to attend the New South Wales 150 th anniversary. A parade and service will be held on Anzac Day. Returned soldiers will be led by Lieutenant-Colonel Stafford to the hall where the Anzac address will be given by Professor Hudson. Local ministers will conduct church services. Members will then march to the war memorial where a wreath will be placed and “Last Post” sounded by Sergeant Brown. OBITUARY MR ARTHUR TONG A well-known resident of Southbridge, Mr Arthur Tong, died at his residence on Tuesday, after a short illness, at the age of 78. Mr Tong arrived in New Zealand in 1879 by the Lady Jocelyn,’ and lived in various parts of Canterbury before taking over the farm at Southbridge, which had been held since the early days of settlement by the late Mr G. C. Waby. Eventually his son took over the farm and Mr Tong and his wife lived in the Southbridge township, but he was obliged to resume farming on the death of his son.

By Mr Tong the Southbridge district lost a citizen who took a keen and active interest in the welfare of the district At various times he served on the District High School Committee, of which he was treasurer for many years, the Town Board, Recreation Ground Committee. Ellesmere Cemetery Board, and on many clubs and societies. For a long period he was a member of the Foresters’ Lodge, and was a staunch member of the Methodist Church, serving as a circuit steward. His principal recreation was bowling, and he was a member of the Southbridge Club. Mrs Tong died nearly two years ago, and Mr Tong leaves a daughter and six grandchildren. SWIMMING BATH FOR OHOKA SCHOOL ASSISTANCE FROM EDUCATION BOARD The Ofaoka School Committee met recently. Mr F. Heald presided. The headmaster reported that the attendance had been well maintained. ; The roll contained 24 boys and 31 , girls. SWIMMING CARNIVAL AT AMBERLEY

LARGE NUMBER OF EVENTS DECIDED

The carnival of the Amberley Swimming Club was held on Saturday in fine weather. Included ifa the sports were races for the Amberley School children. The many children participating was a credit to the work of the staff in teaching swimming and diving. The children were divided into three teams and the most points were scored by the Tui team with 62. Bellbird, 481 points, was second, and Kiwi secured 441 points. The adult races drew good entries and provided some close finishes. The handicapper was Mr I. Mai thus, and nearly all the handicap races were close. There was a large attendance of spectators.
