RUGBY IN NORTH CANTERBURY

OPENING OF THE SEASON SENIOR GAMES WILL BEGIN ON APRIL 30 It was decided to begin the senior football competition on April 30, at a meeting of delegates ot the North Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union at Rangiora on Monday evening. The president (Mr J. T. M. Piki) presided over a full attendance. , ~ , . Other grades will probably begin a week later. , „ „ The Amberley delegate moved a resolution that each club be levied an additional £3 3s for this year only to augment the insurance func. The motion was defeated and it was decided to play benefit matches through the season for each club. RANGIORA GOLF CLUB TWENTY NEW MEMBERS ELECTED The membership of the Rangiora Golf Club is the highest that it has ever been. This is ittributed to the excellent condition of the course and the comparatively low subscription. At a meeting of the committee last evening 20 new members were elected. Arrangements are in hand for the Rangiora tournament on April 30 and May 1, and a record entry is expected. The open Easter hamper competition next week-end is being well patronised. Entries will be received until the start of the competition. NEW SCHOOL FOR WAIAU ADVICE FROM EDUCATION BOARD The April meeting of the Waiau School Committee was held recently. Mr T. H. Belton presided. Correspondence was received from the Minister for Education, the Education Board, and the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes about the committee’s request for renovations to the school building. The Education Board stated that the scheme for remodelling the school had been abandoned and that when circumstances permitted a new building would be built. The committee decided that the new building was drgently needed because of the cold in the old building in the winter. The secretary reported that there was a good credit balance on the working for the year, FAREWELL SOCIAL AT IRWELL LONG RESIDENCE OF FAMILY IN DISTRICT Mr and Mrs S. Gibson, who have moved to Riccarton after residing at Irwell for 30 years, were given a farewell social in the Irwell schoolroom, at which there was a large attendance. Mr R. T. McMillan presided. Musical and other items were given by Mrs L. B. Coe and Misses Coe, Miss J. Felton, Mrs W. E. Doak, Mrs T. W. Felton, and Master M. Welsh. For dancing, music was played by members of the Coe family. . Tributes to the work of Mr and Mrs Gibson and family as citizens were paid by Messrs R. T. McMillan, L. B. Coe, W. S. McLaughlin, and H. R. Barnett. From the residents Mr McMillan presented a clock to Mr and Mrs Gibson, handbags to Miss Gibson and Mrs Wise, their daughters, and a gift to Miss Adelaide Wise. OBITUARY MR ROBERT SIMPSON The death occurred recently of Mr Robert Simpson at the residence of his niece, Mrs M. Houston, “Riverside,” Kimberley. Mr Simpson was born at Ballarat, Victoria, in 1856, and came to New Zealand when a young man. For several years he was employed in the Railway Department’s Hillside workshops in Dunedin In 1888 Mr Simpson returned to Australia, and after a few years there' returned to New Zealand and was appointed car and waggon inspector for the Railway Department at Cross Creek, Auckland. He retired in 1921. Mr Simpson is survived by his sister, Mrs G. B. West (Melbourne), and two brothers, Mr Alexander Simpson (Wellington), and Mr John Simpson (Sydney). The funeral, which took place at the Kimberley Cemetery, was attended by many relatives and friends. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. L. W. Rothwell, of Sheffield. OPENING OF KAIKOURA GOLF CLUB Dr. R. L. Withers, president of the Kaikoura Golf Club, welcomed members and visitors from other clubs at the opening of the Kaikoura season. A mixed Canadian foursome wras played. H. Wallace and Mrs F. B. Sabiston being the winners. The best cards were: H. Wallace and Mrs F. B. Sabiston 36. G. C. Wallace and Miss C. Wallace 37, E, H. Workman and Miss Stubbersfield 37, H. A. Brown and Mrs Carson 38, D. A. Barker and Mrs Barker 39, F. R. Symes and Mrs Withers 39. NATIONAL PARTY MEETING AT CHEVIOT At -the invitation of the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, a committee meeting of the Cheviot branch of the National Party was held at his residence. Mr Forbes gave an interesting address on the organisation and aims of the National Party. ' . Commander Bush, chairman of the branch, explained the local organisation. and what had been done in canvassing the district. Keen interest was shown by the members present. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs Forbes and the Misses Forbes for their hospitality; - EUCHRE PARTY FOR AKAROA BAND Miss L. Vangioni and Mr J. Davis bad the highest scores at the progressive euchre party in the Fire Brigade Hall, in aid of the Akaroa Silver Band. Mr Trevor Pool won the consolation prize. .
