ST. JOHN AMBULANCE
TO THE KJHTOa or TUB I'KESS. Sir. —It is very plain to see that friend “Civis” is not hostile to St. John Ambulance Brigade work, but it seems very much as though he is trying to put something across some of the brigade members. My friend is not very far-seeing (perhaps for reasons of his own), but I would like to point out to him that there are many reasons why the brigade, at home and abroad, wear uniforms. the chief of which is that they are quickly seen in, crowds, which in some instances may be hostile to law and order. Then again, does “Civis think it is fair that the men and women who give so much of their time for the love of the work, and without any monetary reward, and in many instances without even the thanks of the sick or injured or their relatives should be at all times ready for duty, wearing their perhaps best suits or dress, and have them ruined by the blood of accident victims, or in some other way connected with that accident? , , I cannot £ee “Civis,” judging by his letter, wearing either military or semimilitary uniform, for the good of his fellow men. I can see he is something smug, sitting back and criticising while others pay and do the job that all loyal members of St. John Ambulance are doing. Regarding band instruments, more power to St. John Ambulance if they can get a cadet band together. “Civis" might not understand that the easiest and best discipline is march discipline, and discipline is a very essential thing .in all work or works of the Order of St. John.—Yours, etc.. LOVER OF THE ORDER.March 31. 1938. [Subject to the right of reply of “Civis.” this correspondence is now closed.—Ed„ “The Press.”!
