YOUTHS TO LEARN FARMING
+ INQUIRY LESS THAN EXPECTED STATE PLACEMENT SERVICE The scheme for youths to learn farming under the subsidised scheme of farm labour, has not, as far as Canterbury is concerned, brought about the anticipated inquiry, states the report of the State Placement Service in Christchurch for the week. There has recently been inquiry for youths to learn farming under the scheme, and odd placements are being made with employers who recognise the necessity for taking advantage of a scheme for training young men in all classes of farming. Placements for the State service in Christchurch for the week totalled 43, 15 being permanent, and 28 temporary. The placements included tradesmen of all classes. There has been more activity in the painting trade, six men being placed. Carpenters can be readily employed, and workers with a special knowledge of steel constructional work are also inquired for. Inquiries have been made from other cities and towns for motor mechanics holding A grade certificates, but the local demand has absorbed all fully qualified workersT" With harvesting nearing completion farmers are now inquiring for teamsters in particular. Several men were placed but there are still vacancies to be filled. The Government's subsidised scheme in the building, joinery and bricklaying trades is still to the fore, and several contracts are being completed. There' is a very fine type of youth desiring to take up a trade.
