General de Llano, the Spanish rebel leader, violently attacked Britain during an address to a parade o 50,000 German-officered rebel troops at La Linea, close to the Gibraltar frontier, says the Gibraltar coi respondent of the “Daily Herald. “British treachery robbed us of Gibraltar, which always was, is, and shall be, Spanish,” he declared. “Its rock now shelters criminals and pirates, but we shall soon release Gibraltar from these blackguards and deliver it to its legitimate owners, the true Spaniards.”

Mr Neville Chamberlain, making a statement in the House of Commons on the appeal to the Spanish combatants to cease civilians, said that the Spanish Government was willing; but General Franco had replied that he must reserve freedom of action to strike at military objectives wherever they were found.

Informing the House of Commons of the contents of the Spanish insurgents’ Note on the sinking of the steamer Alcira, which Britain regarded as unsatisfactory, and of the British rejoinder, the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) added: “In these circumstances the British Government must hold the Salamanca authorities responsible for the damage incurred. It has therefore reserved its right to claim full compensation in due course for the sinking of the ship and losses suffered by the crew.”
