“AN UNSIGHTLY STRUCTURE”

RENEWAL OF THEATRE URGED

The opinion that because of its unsightly appearance, some definite steps should be taken towards the renewal of the Majestic Theatre. Ashburton, which was destroyed by fire last year, was expressed by the Advance Ashburton Association last evening. It was said that the size of the town warranted two theatres, and the dilapidated state of the burnt-out structure detracted from the beauty of that area of the town in which it was situated.

Mr M. J. Burgess (president) presided at the meeting. The discussion about the theatre was taken in committee.

It was decided that the shields on the barometer awarded for the school gardens competition should be inscribed up to date, It was decided to thank Messrs Millichamp Brothers for judging the competition. On the motion of Mr F. J. K. Cooper it was decided to send a letter of congratulation to the Ashburton Silver Band on winning the B grade Dominion championship. Mr Cooper also suggested that women should be urged to join the association. Discussion on this matter was deferred to a later meeting.
