PERSONAL NOTES
ASHBURTON The Rev. A. Mcßean. who was elected president at the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand which was held recently at Wellingtonl, will return to Ashburton today. The Rev. C. Irving Benson, of Melbourne, will be the principal speaker at the service to celebrate the bi-cen-tenary of Methodism at the Baring square Methodist Church on Friday evening.
Appreciation of the practical interest Mr A. J. Rawstorne had taken in the work of the Ashburton East School during the three years he had been on the staff, was recorded at the meeting of the school committee on Monday evening. Mr Rawstorne left last week to take up a, position at Palmerston North.

ANNUAL BARRACKS BEGIN TO-DAY

go into barracks at the Ashburton Drill Hall for three days, beginning to-day. The first two days will be devoted to infantry, recreational, and physical training, and instruction in musketry. On Friday the cadets will hold a field day at the riverbed range, when the annual shooting matches for the Godley Cups will be held. The cadets will be in charge of Lieutenant E. J. Wood, assisted by Lieutenants T. Phillips, D. A. Smith, and N. J. Hosking. Sergeant-Major W. Edmonds, W. 0.1., and Sergeant A. M.
