PREPARATION FOR CAMP
RECONNAISSANCES NEAR SUMNER In preparation for the coming camp of the First Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, at Motukarara, the officers carried out a reconnaissance in the Mount Pleasant-Scarborough area. The purpose of the reconnaissance was to arrive at a plan which could be used to test the efficiency of the latest methods of training. A very comprehensive exercise will be carried out. This will entail the use of motor transport, military radio and motorcycle units.
" Briefly, the plan consists of a landing p.t Sumner by an invading force. Finding it impossible to land at Sumner, the invaders will turn their attention to Taylor’s Mistake, where their landing is successful. The invaders will then occupy Scarborough hill to -cover the landing of further troops before an advance on Lyttelton.
The problem which will face trainees is that of collecting all the troops in the area, and rushing them up by motor transport for the purpose of launching an attack and driving out the invaders. Captain W. G. Rich, Commanding Southern Depot, New Zealand Medical Corps, attended the reconnaissance and considered the
problems entailed in handling the casualties in such an action. The New Zealand Medical Corps will co-operate with the First Battalion. Canterbury Regiment, in the camp and during the exercise.
