NAVAL BOMBERS COLLIDE

♦ THREE SURVIVORS OF AIR CRASH ACCIDENT IN MANOEUVRES OFF CALIFORNIA SAN DIEGO, February 3. Naval headquarters has announced that two of the navy’s largest air bombers collided in mid-air 70 miles from the shore during manoeuvres. A boat from the flagship Pennsylvania picked up four survivors, one of whom died in hospital on the ship. Eight bodies have been recovered.

The aeroplanes were leading massed fleet manoeuvres after dark when the accident occurred. One bomber plunged in flames into the sea and disappeared and the other broke up on striking the water. All the vessels in the vicinity turned on their searchlights and lowered boats for an all night search for other possible survivors. Three hundred aeroplanes from the aircraft carriers Lexington and Saratoga will join in the search at dawn.
