A HOME FOR THE ASSYRIANS
No Suitable Area Found BRITISH OVERTURES TO IRAQ (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) (Received February 4, 10.30 p.m.) RUGBY, February 3. Replying in the House of Commons to a question, the Foreign Secretary, Mr R. A. Eden, said that in spite of the efforts of Britain to facilitate the task of the League Committee on Assyrians, it had proved impossible to find a suitable area where all Assyrians could be settled together. He recalled that the League Council had decided last September to adopt a scheme for reorganisation, on a self-supporting basis, of the existing temporary settlement on the river Khabur in Syria, which contained about 9000 Assyrians. The council had decided at the same time, that the committee must terminate such functions as it possessed in respect to Assyrians remaining in Iraq. The council had invited the Iraq Government to take steps to ensure that this section of the Assyrians should be given every assistance to settle down as a prosperous and contented section of the Iraq people. He understood the Iraq Government had stated its willingness to do this.
