STATE PLACEMENT SERVICE
DEMAND FOR TRADESMEN AND SEASONAL WORKERS
The demand for harvesting labour has so far been met, according to a report from the State Placement Office yesterday. It is expected that there will be a further impetus _in seasonal work next week if conditions remain favourable. Experienced workers are advised to keep in close touch with the Placement Officer, so that employers’ demands will be promptly answered. Fully experienced six-horse teamsters with a knowledge of all farm work are in demand, and. though several were placed this week, there are still vacancies to be filled. Rouseabouts with a general- knowledge of farm work are also being sought, and married couples can be placed. In several occupations tradesmen are wanted; carpenters are in strong demand for work outside the city, and men coming from jobs which are nearly finished have no difficulty in finding work. “A” grade motor mechanics are in demand and two were placed during the week. Fitters with a knowledge of Diesel engines are also required. There is a growing inquiry for youths from 18 to 25 years of age for the building trade, and several placements are under consideration. The week’s placements were (with private employers) 72, made up of 21 permanent positions, and 51 temporary.
