DIAMOND HARBOUR FERRY
TO THE EDITOR OF THE I’RESS “:r, —In Tuesday’s issue you publish an interesting account of the Lyttelton Borough Council’s gonsideration of a report of a proposed ferry service to Diamond Harbour. If there is going to be any progress in borough affairs, the Mayor, Mr Sutton, should take the ratepayer fully into his confidence. Progress is often hindered by responsible persons having no vision. If the Diamond Harbour settlement is a drag on the finances of the borough, surely something should be done to ease the burden, We want a live council and a progressive Harbour Board. The Mayor should not condemn a scheme without giving details of his objections. Surely the ratepayers must see that if Lyttelton is to continue as a borough, it must give some justification for its existence. . Let the citizens of Lyttelton put their house in order, and then force the Harbour Board to clean up the waterfront, demolish the dozens of little dog boxes scattered about the wharves, clean up the old scrap iron heaps, and procure decent transportation on to the wharves, instead of the present system of loading everything into the railway trucks. The Lyttelton Borough Council is surely the body to push these matters, and then assist the city of Christchurch in proci*”ing the tunnel road.— Yours, etc., • EXCELSIOR. February 3, 1938. [The Harbour Board and the Lyttelton Borough Council had no comment to make upon this letter when it was referred to them.]
