GOD AND WORLD POLITICS

Civltas Dei. Vol. HI. By Lionel Curtis. Macmillan and Co. 131 pp. (5/net.)

“In the long run what any society is to become will depend on what it believes, or disbelieves, about the eternal things.” This quotation from Bishop Gore expresses Mr Curtis's first principle. He endeavours in this volume to apply his guiding principle to world affairs as set forth in volume 11. Mr Curtis does not believe in miracles either now or formally. His religion is largely moralistic. He hopes to see the Kingdom of God appear on earth, and thinks that men’s efforts are not unavailing to bring it about. The British Dominions south of the line can do something to bring God’s Kingdom on earth by showing the way to an international commonwealth, which might soon include the democracies of Europe, Canada, and the United States. Mr Curtis envisages a by no means impracticable dream, and his book should be pondered by all thoughtful people interested in the political future of the white races.
