RELIGION TO-DAY
The Recall to Religion. By Various Writers. Eyre and Spottiswoode. 379 pp. (8/6 net.)
With a foreword by the Archbishop of Canterbury and an introductory essay by the Archbishop of York, this volume commends “the recall to religion,” from the point of view of the Church of England. The Bishop of Bristol explains the causes of religious decline. The Bishop of Bradford writes on “The Challenge to Religion.” In between these two contributions are essays on the necessity of religion, the teaching of it, its relation to the State, to morality, to social work and to modern ideas. All of these essays are on a high level of thought, as might be expected when written by such writers as the Dean of Exeter (Dr. Carpenter), the Bishop of Lichfield (Dr. Woods), and the Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Edinburgh (Dr A. E. Taylor). No essay is unworthy of its purpose, and even the exacting reader can find fault only with the necessary brevity of each article.
