INTERNATIONAL TALKS AT CAIRO WIRELESS FREQUENCIES TO BE REALLOCATED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.! , WELLINGTON, February 4. ' New Zealand ijs represented at the international conference now being held in Cairo to discuss telegraph, radio, and telephone questions. This was revealed by the Minister in charge of the Post and Telegraph Department (the Hon. F. Jones) in an interview, this evening. The Dominion’s representative is Mr M. B, Esson, formerly second assistant secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, ancT at present the Dominion’s representative on the Imperial Communications Advisory Committee in London. “The proposals set dowq for discussion at the conference cover a variety of subjects,” said Mr Jones, "and it is expected that they will occupy the attention of delegates for approximately two months. For the telegraph service, the most important proposals to be considered are those of various administrations regarding the proposed adoption of a uniform rate for overseas telegrams.
- “In the field of radio, considerable discussion is expected on the question of the redistribution and use of the bands of frequencies allocated to different radio services. Because of the rapid growth of radio communication generally, there is congestion in Europe and America in certain frequency bands, particularly in those at present available for short-wave broadcasting, and the reallocation of frequencies has become a matter of urgency. “Any proposals which may caust? additional sources of interference with the New Zealand services will be closely watched by the Dominion’s delegate,” added the Minister.
