Following discussions lasting several years between the leading economists of Great Britain, a National Institute of Economic and Social Research has been founded and will begin work in London within the next few weeks. Chief objects of this institute, of which Sir Josiah Stamp is president and Professor N. F. Hall, lately of University College, London, is the first director will be: To conduct research, either by its own regular staff or by persons temporarily associated with it. into the facts and problems of contemporary human society. To provide assistance and facilities for research to members of university staffs and others. In brief, the institute will try to coordinate and collate the best of individual research into economic and social problems, in addition to conducting its own inquiries by means of an expert staff. It will be specially concerned with such problems as commercial policy, certain aspects of unemployment and population Included in the 32 leading British economists, who are members of the provisional committee, are Sir Frederick Leith Ross, Chief Economic Adviser to the Government; Sir William Beveridge. Master of University College Oxford; Sir Arthur Salter, M.F., and' Sir Walter Citrine, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress.
