THE MAYORALTY

TO THB EDITOR OR THE PRESS. Sir,—Permit me to commend the' sagacity and prudence of your correspondent “Civis” in bringing forward at this early date a subject which will shortly be exciting the deepest interest amongst the citizens of Christchurch. He has mentioned six notable candidates, whose characteristic peculiarities and administrative abilities are well known to us all. Possibly a seventh candidate may be found, whose genius for civic business will eclipse the brilliant ability of the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. During my stay in this delightful city I have known several Mayors whose characteristic attitude toward the people was of a divergent nature. We find Dr. Thacker stubborn and amusing, the Conservative Flesher, the inte»fering Archer, and the quiet, elegant, and inoffensive Beanland: but of all the Mayors whom the citizens have elected to that honourable office none has been so worthy of public esteem and confidence as the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. I can only mention one candidate whose 23 years of assiduous labour for the welfare of the city entitles him to the honour and dignity of wearing the Mayoral chain. It must be well understood that though the office of Chief Magistrate be the most dignified position citizens can offer to a chosen individual, it is also a position of trust and responsibility. Now to my way of thinking, merit, virtue, and business acumen could be acknowledged by bringing forward before the citizens of Christchurch, the admirable, the dexterous, and the affable Cr. Manning. My knowledge of Cr. Manning is that he is by experience and nature well fitted to fill the office which will shortly be contested. Surely we cannot speak too highly of a man who for 23 years has been kept before

the eyes, of the public, as of a man most just and honourable. His experience and ability constrain us to lean approvingly towards him, as being the most sure candidate for the high position of representing the people of Christchurch as Mayor of their beautiful city.—Yours, etc., W. MOSDELL. January 18, 1938.
