INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR TITLES NATIONAL MEETING CONCLUDED NEW ZEALAND RECORD BROKEN (PKKSB ASSOCIATION TSLKGRASI.) NELSON, January 18. Tlte New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships were concluded in ideal weather to-day. After Interesting fluctuations in the positions. Southland and Otago drew with five points each in the War Memorial Shield competition. Southland opened the evening with a win, when Miss D. Westerly, improving considerably on her heat performance in lire morning, won the 100 yards junior girls’ freestyle by a touch from Nani Kira, who in the middle stages was two yards in front. J. Cameron (Southland) led all the way in the 220 yards intermediate boys’ freestyle championship and won by 10 yards from Marshall (Canterbury) and C. Ferguson (Otago), who were within a touch of each other. The honours of the 50 yards junior girls’ breaststroke championship went to Otago, when Miss M. Stewart had no trouble in winning from P. Cave (Wanganui) in Msec, only three-fifths of a second outside the New Zealand record. The third New Zealand record was broken at the championships when M. Bell (Auckland), the only competitor in the 75 yards junior boys’ backstroke, covered the distance in 50 l-ssec, cutting three-fifths of a second off his owm record. me final championship, the 100 yards intermediate girls’ race, went to Miss C. Garvin (Otago), who narrowly beat Miss P. Watts (Wanganui) in an exciting finish. Miss K. Grey (Auckland) was leading just in front of Misses Garvin and Watts at the end of the second lap, but she weakened over the final length, me results were;— 100 Yards Junior Girls’ Freestyle—First heat; N. RICCARTON CLUB'S ,MEETING The Riccarton Amateur Swimming Club recently held a successful meeting when races were swum for the championship cup points and club championships.- The racing produced some thrilling finishes.
