FRENCH TRADE TREATY
♦ MR SAVAGE FAVOURABLE TOWARD PROPOSAL (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, December 8. Proposals are to be submitted to the New Zealand Government during the next two weeks by Mr M. Edmond Meyer, French Consul in the Dominion, as a preliminary step to the establishment of a trade treaty between the two countries. Mr Meyer said he had discussed the matter with the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) during October. Mr Savage then indicated that the New Zealand Government was favourably disposed toward the completion of such an agreement. Mr Meyer said that his Government was anxious to secure a trade treaty with the Dominion. He had been very surprised to learn of the recent agreement between New Zealand and Germany and considered that a similar agreement could be made with his country. Mr Meyer added that if an agreement were arranged his Government I A/ould endeavour not to .compete with 1 British-trade with the Dominion,
