TUNNEL ROAD
No Opposition From Harbour Board EVEN VOTING AFTER LONG DEBATE "This board does not oppose the tunnel road as an improved access by main highway between Christchurch and the port, provided it does not interfere with the working of the port." This resolution, moved by Mr C. Ogilvie, and seconded by Mr F. E. Sutton, was carried at the monthly meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday, on the casting vote of the chairman (Mr R. T. McMillan). It ended a debate, conducted in committee, which has been spread over two monthly meetings of the board. The board had considered the matter on several previous occasions, but had done no more than affirm that the board would be prepared to deal with any additional -shipping which might be induced to enter the port by reason of improved access from the city. Mr McMillan, in a brief statement to the press after the meeting said the board now understood that the Chamber of Commerce committee which has been active in negotiations for the tunnel road was not now pressing the demand for access to the wharves by traffic. The committee, it was understood, was anxious for the work to be undertaken by the Government as a national undertaking. The voting on the resolution was as follows: , . „ x For —Messrs McMillan, Oguvie, Sutton, H. M, Chrystall, H. Holland, and A. E. Langdale-Hunt Against—Messrs W. J. Wafter, J. K. McAlpine, F. E. Parnham, W. G. Gallagher, H. Holderness. and J. W. Bowden. ___^
