FORMATION OF ARMY LEAGUE
APPEAL TO BE ISSUED NEXT YEAR

RUGBY, December 4.
An Army .League for Home and Empire Defence is being formed to do for the Army and problems of land defence what the Navy League and the Air League of Britain are doing for the other two services. The Marquess of Willingdon, a former Viceroy of India, has agreed to serve as president, and the Earl of Derby, a war-time Secretary for War, as deputy-president. The council includes Field-Marshals Sir Phillip Chetwode and Lord Milne. The league will issue a manifesto and an appeal early in the New Year.

Seven Queensland records were broken in the Australian athletic championships yesterday. Backhouse (Victoria) won the mile in 4min 21 4-ssec; Mumford (New South Wales) the 440 yards in 48 4-5 sec; Stenner (New South Wales) the 120 yards hurdles in 14 9-10 sec; Stubbs (New South Wales) the three miles walk in 21min 42sec: McKenzie (New South Wales) the shot putt with 45ft siin: Metcalfe (New South Wales) the hop, step, and jump with 48ft 6 1 in; and Shetliffe (New South Wales)) the high jump with 6ft 4 5-Bin.
