CANTERBURY WEST OF ENGLAND SOCIETY The Canterbury West of England Society held an enjoyable evening gathering in the Orange Hall, where there was a good attendance of members and their friends. Mr P. E. L. Broad presided. Items were given by Miss M, Grigor and Miss Connie Hill, and prizes for novelty dances were won by Miss E. Metcalfe and Mr B. OSborne, Mrs Austin and Mr Chappell, and Mrs B. Pike and Mr B. Osborne. Alex Campbell’s Gaiety Orchestra played the music, and Mr TYevor Smith was master of ceremonies. YOUNG PEOPLE’S DANCE An enjovable evening was spent in the Parish Hall, New Brighton, on Saturday, when a young people’s dance was held after the annual football match between the young men of St. Faith’s Anglican and the New Brighton Methodist Churches. The arrangements were carried out by a committee comprising Miss R. Cattermote. i Messrs R. Fitchett, F. Hobbs, C. Seaward. B. Rice, P. Warner, and A. Hobbs. The music was played by Miss Mavis Holden and Mr R. Fitchett was master of ceremonies. The Rev. Kenneth Schollar presented the cup to the winners, the young men of the Methodist Church, and congratulated them on their win. He expressed appreciation of the friendly spirit in which the annual matches were played and the good spirit that exists between the young people of the two churches. The Rev. F. SURPRISE PARTY A surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs J. Scott. Flaxfon, to bid them farewell before they leave the district. The evening was spent in playing progressive euchre, the prize winners being Mrs J. Laskey and Mr E. Bailey. Mr F. Mclntosh, on behalf of the residents of Flaxlon. expressed regret at the departure of Mr and Mrs Scott from the (’.strict, and conveyed the good wishes of the party. It was reported that the school had been visited during the month by Mrs Hewitt, who reported the work was satisfactory. The birthday party was arranged for the end of * September. Mrs Roberts was thanked for two gifts presented for competition. They realised £2 14s 3d for the school funds. SOCIAL AT SPRINGBANK There war- a good attendance at the euchre and dance held In the Springbank School on Saturday evening in aid oi school funds. Exhibition dances were given by Misses Ellen McPherson and Ngairc Calvert (Christchurch). A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs B. Croft and Mr E. Torrence. Prize-win-ners at euchre were Miss Hazel Miles, Mr A. Smith, Miss Iris Miles, and Master Ivan Miles. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Joyce Smith, with extras by Miss Alice Miles and Mr A. RIFLE CLUB BALL The Southbridge Miniature Rifle Club concluded its 1937 season with a ball held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, at which there was a large attendance, including representatives from other clubs A pleasant evening was spent. Dance music was supplied by Mr G. Holland’s orchestra. Miss Marie Nidd playing extras. Messrs L. Hill and A. Lilley were the joint masters of ceremonies. Prizes for a Monte Carlo were won by Miss M. Kaill and Mr N. Mcllraith. In a cards tournament the successful players were Mcsdames W. LUley and Klee and Messrs A. Brown and J. Lillcy. The women supporters of the club helped with the supper arrangements. Before presenting the season’s trophies the president, Mr A. A. FANCY DRESS DANCE The Cust Public Hall, decorated with streamers, butterflies, flowers, and greenery. formed a fitting background for the children’s fancy dress dance, which was organised by the social committee for school jubilee teachers of Cust and West Evreton schools and other helpers. Miss Coleen Coulter (.Christchurch) danced the Highland Fling, sword dance, and sean triubhals; she was presented with gifts by Nancv Lindsay and Master Binnie Lock. Mrs R.
