WAGES CUTS OF 1931

STATEMENT BY MR COATES EXPLAINED [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.} WELLINGTON, September 17. An allegation that the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates had admitted in a recent speech that the imposition of the wage and salary cuts in 1931 was a mistake was refuted by Mr W. P. Endean (National, Parnell) during the Address-m-Reply debate in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Endean said that what Mr Coates had stated was that in the light of experience if he were faced with similar circumstances he would r.ot take the same action. "Mr Coates is a big man for taking up that attitude," added Mr Endean. "He is one of the big men who have filled the pages of history in New Zealand."
