WORK FOR 7000 MEN
, « ACTING-MINISTER'S REVIEW OF SCHEMES [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 13. A statement that complete success had met his efforts to provide four months' full time work for some 7000 men was made in an interview to-day by the Acting-Minister for Labour (the Hon P. C. Webb). The Minister stated that these men, who were all from the register of eligible unemployed, had been mainly in receipt of sustenance. "Starting in June, the commitments that have been entered into with local bodies up to the present date will give four months' employment to 6517 men," the Minister said. "Of this mimber 5696 are in the North Island, and 2821 in the South Island. The works upon which these men are to be employed, and the numbers engaged on each class of work are briefly summarised as follows: — ~ . Formation, metalling, widening, etc.. of roads and streets, 2924. Levelling, formation, improvements, etc., to parks, domains, school grounds, and hospital grounds, 1710. Drainage, river clearing, river-pro-tection, etc., 706. Tree planting, 511. . Footpath construction. kermng, channelling, etc.. 434. Miscellaneous, 226. Total, 6517.
