OBITUARY

MR S. A. HARRIS The death has occurred in SI. George's Hospital of Mr Silas Ambrose Harris, of Okain's Bay. Mr Harris, who was born in 1856, was the eldest son of Mr William Silas Harris, oue of the first settlers. He was educated, and spent the whole of his life in Okain's Bay as a successful farmer. He was well known and very popular throughout Banks Peninsula, and took a keen interest in all local activities. Mr Harris was a foundation member of the Loyal Hand of Friendship Lodge, Manchester Unity, which was established in 1875. Until recently he was a regular attendant at all meetings, and was lodge trustee for more than 40 years. He was a staunch supporter of the Anglican Church, and was for many years a member of the Domain Board, the Cemetery Board, and School Committee. He was also a director of the Okain's Bay Dairy Factory. He was a keen gardener and a lover of native trees and plants. He married a Miss Hammond, a member of a well-known Peninsula family, who died a few years ago. They had three sons and two daughters: Mr A. W. Harris (Little River), Mr Percy Harris (Okain's Bay), Mr Leo. Harris (Christchurch). Mrs A. King (Christchurch), and Mrs F. Hill (Melbourne). The funeral took place at Okain's Bay. The Rev. D. D. Thorpe conducted the service at St. John's Church and at the graveside. Six members of the Loyal Hand of Friendship Lodge were pall-bearers, and the lodge service was read by Provincial Grand Master C. Boleyn. Many beautiful wreaths were sent. MR D. BUCHANAN PALMERSTON N., September 13. The death has occurred of Mr David Buchanan, aged 66, of Tiakitahuna. Mr Buchanan was formerly president of the-Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He was a noted breeder of Ayrshire cattle and large white pigs. In addition to being prominently identified with farming pursuits, he was active in several local bodies for many years.
