KING'S CUP AIR RACE
GARDNER'S RECORD WINNING SPEED (BRITISH OyTICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, September 11. In winning the King's Cup air race, C. Gardner beat the speed of any previous winning machine by not less than 57 miles an hour. The Secretary of State for Air (Viscount Swinton) presented the cup and referred to the accident yesterday in which Wing Commanders E. G. Hilton and Percy Sherran were killed This was the first accident in the race since 1928. The King has asked that his sympathy be expressed to the relatives of the victims. In winning the race last year. Gardner flew a Percival Vega Gull at 164.5 miles an hour. In 1935, Flight Lieutenant Tommy Rose won in a Miles Falcon, at an average speed of 176.28 miles an hour.
