CRITICISM OF THE TOUR
N.Z. CRICKETERS IN ENGLAND PRAISE FOR WALLACE, COWIE AND DONNELLY LONDON, September 12. The reviewing the New Zealand cricket tour, comment on the tourists' successes from the middle of June, mentioning that two of the four losses since then were caused by the wickets breaking up on the third day. The "Cricketer" states that the batsmen in the early part of the tour played back top much, and it names Wallace, Donnelly, and Cowie as outstanding players. It also praises Vivian and Dunning for their steady bowling, and Page for his fighting innings in the mam matches. "The Times' calls Donnelly a "cricketing Jacobite." It says that he was always at his best when fighting for losing causes. Howard Marshall, writmg in the "Daily Telegraph," comments on the severitv of the programme, stating that With next to no rain to provide days off, the players were practically worn out by the end of the tour. The "Sunday Dispatch, commenting on the Irish match, gravely advises spectators to arrive early for the return game so as not to miss the drawing of stumps.
YORKSHIRE LOSES FIVE FOR 293
ANOTHER CENTURY TO lIUTTON LONDON, September 11. In a challenge match against Middlesex, Yorkshire has made 293 for five wickets (Hutton 121, Mitchell 86). SANDHAM DECIDES TO RETIRE LONDON, September 12. A. Sandham has decided to retire from first-class cricket. The Surrey club has accepted his resignation.
