SNOOKER CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW FOR DISTRICT EVENT Following is the draw for the first round of matches in the North Canterbury Amateur Billiards Association's snooker championship:—R. Jones v. J. E. Doggett, L. P. Devlin v. S. Lugg, S. Kirk v. J. S. Pulley, K. Purvis v. T. Morton, W. Stephens v. B. Dench, D. W. L. Mehrtens v. J. C. Simpson, R. A. Scott v. H. Rule, G. Pulley v. E. Thompson, R. M. Ball v. F. Mehrtens, L. Morris v. V. C. Pulley, F. Devlin v. W. B. Karaitiana. D. W. L. Mehrtens and J. S. Simpson and R. M. Ball and F. Mehrtens will play at Kaiapoi, but all other matches will be played at Rangiora. In the first round, C. Becks, P. Pulley, C. L. Watkins, E. E. Doggett, and H. Manihera have byes. The first match will be played on Thursday evening. Parish Service A parish service was held at St. John's Anglican Church, Rangiora, on Sunday evening. It was conducted by the vicar (Archdeacon A. C. Purchas), who was assisted by the curate (the Rev. F. O. B. Lane), and Messrs A. Gordon (Woodend), and J. H. Gulliver (Rangiora). Supper was served after the service, and visitors from country districts were welcomed by Mr J. C. Hancox. Truck Hits Telegraph Pole A motor-truck, driven by an employee of its owner, W. Bowman, a threshing-mill proprietor, of Riccarton, was extensively damaged when it struck a telegraph pole on the Rangiora road at Woodend yesterday morning. The driver, who was trying to avoid a dog on the road when the accident occurred, was not injured. The pole was broken off near the ground. Junior Billiards Championship In the semi-finals of the North Canterbury Amateur Billiards Association's junior championship, R. Jones (Rangiorat will play W. Fantham (Oxford) at Rangiora this evening, and J. Currie (Rangiora) will play R. Inwood (Oxford) at Oxford to-morrow evening. The two finalists will draw for the location of the deciding match. Personal Mr A. Ncale, of Christchurch, is relieving at the Rangiora branch of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd. Ministers' Association The Rangiora Ministers' Association met at the residence of the Rev. E. P. Y. Simpson yesterday afternoon, the president (the Rev. W. S. Neale) presiding. An address on the life of the Rev. David Anderson, a Presbyterian home missionary, whose last charge was at Sefton. was given by the Rev. G. W. Hercus, of Kaiapoi. TENNIS CLUB SOCIAL AT WAIPARA The final social in aid of the Glenmark Tennis Club was held in the Waipara Hall recently. Euchre prizes were won by Miss Burrows and Mr lan Ferguson. Winners of the aggregate prizes were Mesdames Darroch and Ferguson and Messrs R. Rowney and A. Leithwick. Music was played by Mrs Ferguson. Miss E. Hall, and Mrs E. Robins. Messrs L. Cooper and E. Whyte were masters of ceremonies.

ST PETER'S CHURCH, AKAROA ANNUAL BAZAAR HELD The annual bazaar and sale of work organised by the ladies' committee of St. Peter's Church. Akaroa, was held in the Parish Hall, and was a huge success. The amount raised was exceptionally high. The bazaar was opened by the Mayor of Akaroa (Mr F. R. E. Davis). In the | evening a very enjoyable social was I held, with games, compettiions, and dancing, the music being played by Mesdames I. Pilkington and G. A. E. Le Lievre. Mr P. G. Riches, people's warden, was master of ceremonies. The Ven. Archdeacon A. J. Petrie, the new vicar of Akaroa, congratulated all those who had helped to make the day so highly successful. Mrs T. Shuttleworth, presided at the forty-sixth annual meeting of the Akaroa Lawn Tennis Club. The report and balancesheet were read and adopted. The report showed that the club had had a successful year, and won the "Surprise" and Rhodes Cups. The balancesheet showed a most satisfactary balance. Seven resignations- were accepted with regret, and six new members were elected. Opening day was fixed for Thursday, September 23. It was decided to place on record the services of Miss Ivy Hayward, the club's leading player, who had left some months ago to reside in Dunedin. It was decided to have the courts top-dressed. MISSION ADDRESS AT HORRELVILLE WORK IN SOLOMON ISLANDS A mission meeting was held recently in the Horrelville Methodist Church. The speaker was the Rev. Belshazzar Gina. a missionary from the Solomon Islands. Mr Gina gave a description of his life as a missionary, stating that the lives of the islanders had changed greatly since the coming of the Mr Gina sang a solo, "The Old Rugged Cross." Mouth-organ, Spanish guitar, and other instrumental items were also given bv Mr Gina. A collection of £5 3s 4d" was taken in aid of the foreign mission. 1 Cricket Club The annual meeting of the Horrelville Cricket Club was held recently in the Domain pavilion. Mr C. Bennett presided. It was decided to enter a team in the junior B grade of the North Canterbury Cricket Association. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr F. G. Horrell; vice-presidents, Messrs C. I HORORATA GOLF CLUB RESULTS FOR SIME CUP In the Sime Cup contest, judged on the best rounds out of six, A. D. Oliver was the winner with a score of 293. Next best scores were: E. H. Sime 296, W. O. Gray 297, W. Stone 298, A. J. Harris 301. H. A. Thome 303, R. Murray 304, H. A. Oliver 311. The Presidents Stick handicap was won by A. J. Harris, with a score of 153. Next best scores were: W. O. Gray 159. A. D. Oliver 159, F. S. Barrett 161, R. G. Keilh 165. The medal match played in conjunction with the President's Stick was won by R. Murray, with a score of 73. Ladies' Club Playint* on the Hororata Terrace Station links on Saturday, Mrs E.' H. Sime won the Tisdall Cleek. Personal Mr V. DANCE AT PREBBLETON Under the auspices of the Prebbleton Domain Board, a successful dance was held in the Prebbleton Hall, and there were present numerous visitors from town and country districts. Music for dancing was supplied by Les. Kinsman's orchestra, with extras by Mr E. Bartram. A lucky spot dance was won by Mr and Mrs J. Griffiths, and a Monte Carlo dance by Mr E. Bartram and partner. Card room competitions were won by Mr and Mrs T. Smith, Mrs G. Rutherford, and Mr A. Tomson. Mr H. Prebble was master of ceremonies. Those present included Mesdames W. Downey, J. C. Neill, L. CONCERT AT CHEVIOT After the combined institutes' show of work at Cheviot, a concert was given in the evening. Wilsted, Mr Allard; recitations, Miss Robins; sketch, Miss B. Pond and Mr F. D. Childs; one-act play, Misses Marjorie Childs and B. Pond, and Mr F. D. Childs; play, Mesdames A. Williamson and G. Walls, Messrs Bernard Rennell, V. Harrison, and B. Delaney. The women of the West Eyreton branch of St. James' Anglican Guild held an egg afternoon in the West Eyreton Hall, in aid of St. Saviour's Orphanage. Competitions were won by Mesdames A. Hurley and C. Wayland, and Miss M. Blackmore. Miss Mountfort, matron of St. Saviour's Orphanage, addressed the meeting, and gave a description of the life of the orphans. Miss Mountfort thanked the people for their generous gifts of jams and preserves, and a total of 226 i dozen eggs.

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AT HORNBY The Prebbleton Brass Band, under the conductor, Mr Wendleborne, attended a church service at the Presbyterian Church at Hornby on Sunday, when they led a parade of members of the Hornby Druids' Lodge. Personal Mr and Mrs W. Kolkman left on Monday for a tour of the Nelson and Westland districtsMrs W. Southon and her daughters, the Misses B. and J. Southon, have left Prebbleton to live in Christchurch. Miss Violet Kolkman returned on Saturday from Greymouth, where she spent several weeks' holiday. She was accompanied by Mrs L.. McNeill, whose guest she had been.
