CHRISTCHURCH CENTRE MEETS MATCH SYSTEM REVISED No opposition was met by the proposals for radical changes In the match system of the Christchurch centre of the New Zealand Bowling Association, which were embodied in the new programme submitted by the match committee at the meeting of the centre last evening, at which Mr M. F. Barnett presided. The committee suggested a wide alteration from last season's system of play. It proposed that the Saturday matches should consist of a three-rink championship, with a pennant competition for the other members of the clubs. Apart from the condition that a club might enter only one team for the three-rink championship, the committee wished to impose no restrictions on clubs. They would be permitted to enter for both competitions or for one only, and in the case of the pennant competition it was proposed that a club could enter any number of teams it chose. In the pennant competition a team would consist of two rinks, which would play on the same green, with aggregate scoring. This method of scoring would also be observed in the threerink championship. In the three-rink championship a point would be allowed to a club for each match It won, with half a point for a tie. In the pennant competition a club would be allocated 10 points each Saturday for winning all Its matches, with a proportionate reduction for each loss by a team. The programme for each competition would consist of six rounds, but in the event of any round not being played on the proper date, it would be abandoned, as the committee wished to complete the programme before Christmas. In each competition the club scoring the greatest number of points would be the winner, and Jn the event of a tie between two or more clubs, there would be a play-off later in the season. It was proposed to follow the usual practice of having no competition games on New Zealand Cup day, also to leave the first Saturday in December free for the South Canterbury and country matches. The recommendations of the match committee were adopted in full. Mr W. Healey reported on the activities of the representatives of the centre at the recent conference of sports bodies called to discuss the Hon. W. E. Tarry's proposals for a National Council of Sport. Motions of sympathy with relatives of the following were passed:—Messrs J. A. Ambrose, F. H. East, J. Mlddleton, W. Atkinson, H. Pearce, and Mrs A. Nicholson. Thirteen Nelson bowlers, men and women, arrived in Wellington by the Awatea to-day after a successful tour of New South Wales and Queensland. The manager, Mr W. A. Dee, said that since they left New Zealand at the end of May they had played 64 matches, won 44, drawn two, and lost 18. ... ,«„ The standard of bowling in Australia was not up to the best New Zealand play, said Mr Dee. Members of the team, however, took some time to adjust themselves to the heavier Australian greens, and 4ost the first eight matches for that reason. Greens In Australia were longer, 125 feet, compared with 112 in New Zealand. The couch grasses with which they were planted were much heavier, and aid not wear bare at the ends as did New Zealand greens. At present they were trying the cultivation of a brown top mixture to improve the greens. Mr Dee said his team had met the pick of Australian players in the districts they had travelled. The team's performances were very much better than anything they
