AUSTRALIAN GOLF TITLE
OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP ’ BEGUN C. J. WARD PLAYS WELL FOR 79 (Received September 9, 11.30 pjn.) SYDNEY, September 9., Five players -share the lead at the end of the first round of the Australian • open golf championship, which is being held on the Australian Club links at Kensington. But for an unfortunate occurrence, Len Nettlefold, the Tasmanian champion, would have led the field outright. He played the wrong ball to the first green, and was penalised two strokes. He had a stroke round of 71. The leaders at the end of the first round are:— T. S. McKay (N.S.W.), A. V. Rae (Vic.), R. D. Crook (SA), ‘Rufus Stewart (S.A.), *F. Bolgcr (N.S.W.), 72. L. Nettelfold (Tas.), *G. Naismith (Vic.), *N. G. von Nida (N.S.W.), *T. D. Bourke (N.S.W.). 73. *Boorer (Vic.), ‘Booth (N.S.W.). A. S. Bradshaw (N.S.W.), *W. Campbell (N.S.W.), *J. Petterson (Canberra), *O. Walker (Q'ld.), H. L. Williams (Vic.), W. D. Wishart (Vic.), *W. Harvey (SA..), 74. Others included J. Ferrier (N.S.W.), *C. Gray (N.S.W.), ‘E. Cremin (N.S.W.), 75. ‘W. Holder (N.S.W.), 76. Ivo Whitton (Vic.), S. A. Keane (Q’ld.), *V. S. Richardson (N.S.W.). 77. H. W. Hattersley (N.S.W.), W. Bolger (N.S.W.), C. J. Ward (N.Z.). 79. I. M. Godby (N.Z.), 97. ‘Denotes professional. Ward played excellent tee shots, but was early astray with his approaches. He made several visits to bunkers, and later missed half a dozen short putts. Generally, he was playing very soundly. Godby started with an eight at a par four hole, and after that played completely without confidence, being frequently in the rough. He also took three putts on a number of greens. Ferrier was disappointing, being erratic with his irons.
