LABOUR RETAINS SEAT

SPRINGBURN DIVISION OF GLASGOW (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, September 8. The result of the by-election in the Springburn division of Glasgow was as follows: — Mrs Agnes Hardie (Labour) 14,859 Colonel Shaw (National Conservative) .. 8,881 Labour thus retains the seat. The successful candidate’s husband held the seat in the General Election of 1935. He was a brother of the late Mr Keir Hardie, the well-known Labour leader. He polled 20,286 votes against Mr J. McNicol (Conservative) with 11,859, at the last General Election. This is the thirty-seventh byelection since • the last General Election. Of these the Government parties have lost eight seats. A by-election is pending at North Islington, caused by the death of Colonel A. W. Goodman (Conservative).
