CHINESE VALOUR PRAISED

OFFICIAL REPORT FROM NANKING FIERCE ATTACKS RESISTED IN SHANGHAI AREA (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, September 9. The Chinese Consul has received the following cablegram from Nanking;— “The valour of the Chinese troops defending Paoshan City, who held out against the surrounding Japanese forces, has turned the tide of battle in that sector. The Chinese forces around Paoshan were forced to retire on Sunday, but one battalion was left within the walled city, and it stuck to its post until the arrival of fresh reinforcements, who pushed back the Japanese thrust. “After a battle which lasted 12 hours, several Japanese attempts to land troops at Liuho, Siao Chuensha, Ganglin-kow and Chiyakow were all frustrated. Three thousand Japanese troops, with a number of heavy field-guns, landed yesterday from four transports in the Yangtsepoo district. “Fierce attacks on the Chinese positions on the Chunkung road and the Yinziang village followed, the attackers being assisted by heavy artillery, naval guns, and an aerial

bombardment, but the Chinese positions remained unmoved. “Two Japanese destroyers and one gunboat, which were lying off Lotien, were sunk by Chinese air bombs.”
