OBITUARY

MISS M. M. GIBSON (t’BISB ASSOCIATION TSI.KGBAX.) AUCKLAND, September 3. News has been received of the death at Tientsin, China, on September 5, of Miss Mary Mowat Gibson, a New Zealand missionary. The message stated that Miss Gibson had died suddenly after an operation. She was the only daughter of the Rev. Mackenzie Gibson, who was well known as vicar of several parishes in the diocese of Christchurch between 1886 and 1915, end who served as a chaplain with the New Zealand expeditionary force from the latter year until the end of the Great War. Since 1919 Mr Gibson has been living at Esher, Surrey. His daughter left Christchurch about 14 years ago to take up teaching work in China under the Church Missionary Society. For a long period she was on the staff of a school in Peiping, and became first commissioner of girl guides for North China. For the last two years she had been engaged in evangelistic and general missionary work at Tientsin. Since her departure for China she had made only one return visit to New Zealand Mr Noel Gibson, headmaster of Dilworth School. Auckland, is a brother of Miss Gibson. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES SPRINGSTON SOUTH Mrs P. V. Bailey, president of the Springston Women's Institute, was in the chair at the September meeting. The members were entertained by the green group, Mesdames H. Hokin, C. N. Powell, H. Hamilton, A. Powell, and P. V. Bailey, Misses N. Ryan, E. Bailey. The competition was won by Miss N. Ryan. Final arrangements were made for the group display to be held at Ladbrooks. The institute competitions resulted:— Plate of pikelets: Mrs Joblin 1, Mrs H. Hamilton 2, Mrs E. Heywood 3. Vase of spring flowers; Mrs P. V. Bailey 1, Mrs C. N. Powell 2, Mrs C. Heywood 3 Best bloom in garden; Miss E. Bailey 1, Mrs W. Mounce 2, Mrs Joblin 3 Child's frock, made from an old dress: Mrs P. V. LINCOLN Mrs A. Button (vice-president) presided over a good attendance at the meeting of the Lincoln Womens’ Institute. Arrangements were completed for the group’s arts and crafts exhibition to be held this month. Monthly competitions winners were: Sugar-bag apron: Mrs W. Templeton 1 Mrs A. Moreland 2, Mrs W. Jordan 3! Best bloom: Mrs Templeton 1. Mrs Tucker 2, Mrs Moreland ?. Custard tart: Mrs A, Moreland Mrs W. Templeton 2. Miss A. Hoploy and Miss N. Bailey acted as judges. The hostesses were Mrs W. Jordan, Misi D. Moir, and Miss I. Woods. WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION SVVANNANOA BRANCH Mrs H. M. Burgin presided at the monthly meeting of the Swannanoa branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. There was a good attendance. Arrangements were made to hold a garden party on October 16, at which it was decided to have plant, cake, and variety stalls. Mrs Bui’gin read a letter from Mr P. J. Twomey about the Makogai lepei s, and it was decided to give a donation of £1 to the Christmas gift fund. The competitions resulted;—-Sausage rolls; Mrs Patterson 1, Miss J. Winter 2 Best bloom in garden; Mrs Hunt 1, Mrs M A. Winter 2. The hostesses were Mrs Elliott and Miss J. Winter. HAREVVOOD JUNIOR BRANCH Miss M. McConnel presided at the monthly meeting of the Harewood junior branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. A competition for the best embroidered handkerchief was won by Miss M, Anderson, with Miss C. Allin second. The competition for the October meeting will be for the prettiest cup and saucer. ORANGE’ LODGE ANNUAL DANCE Members of the Loyal Orange Lodge Purple Star No. 2A (Christchurch), and about 200 friends, gathered last evening at the Orange Hall, Worcester street, to enjoy their third annual ball.'The hall was decorated with streamers and coloured lights, and an arch of welcome showed the emblems of the order —the open Bible, a crown, and crossed swords. Colin Campbell’s orchestra provided the music. Worshipful Master Bro. T. Elliott welcomed the guests of honour, the Rt. Most Worshipful Dominion Grand Master Bro. N. Gordon, and Mrs Gordon. District Master Worshipful Bro. W Pope and Mrs Pope, Worshipful Master Bro. T. McCaw, of the Protestant Alliance Benefit Lodge, and Mrs H. McCaw. Arrangements for the function were made by a committee comprising Bros. A. Taggart, L. McLenaghen, J Qualtroughy, and G. Ridout (secretary). Bro. A. Taggart was master of ceremonies.
