LITTLE VARIATION FROM LAST YEAR NEARLY 200 MEN WORKING IN BOROUGH The number of unemployed registered at Waimate shows little variation from last year’s figures, though it still stands at a fairly high total 193. The number is made up as follows, according to figures received from the Employment Bureau yesterday:—s4 on sustenance, 114 on No. 5 scheme (borough council 80, county council 34), 12 on No. 13 (b) scheme (full-time work), 12 on No. 4 (a) scheme (work on own farms), and one on No. 4 (f) scheme (subsidised farm labour for y °Tho S temporary Employment Bureau in the Waimate Courthouse is now in full charge of unemployment business, and expects to improve its organisation even further when the permanent office, next to the Waimate Gas Company’s office in Queen street, is occupied. RATE DEMANDS AT WAIMATE SUMMARY FOR COUNTY A total rate demand of £26,170 18s 7d is shown in a summary of the rate demands for the Waimate County for the current financial year. This total is made up of a county rate of £16,633 6s 7d. a harbour rate of £2799 6s 6d, and a hospital rate of £6744 5s 6d. The corresponding figures for last year were: County £12,507 3s lid; harbour £2105 15s 9d; hospital. £5525 17s 2d; total. £20,138 16s lOd. RATES PAID PROMPTLY AT WAIMATE BOROUGH COUNCIL FIGURES Although the Waimate Borough Council issued its rate demands for the current year only on August 24, a good amount has been paid in already. The Town Clerk (Mr B. S. Runciman) reported yesterday that to date £273 had been collected. Unemployment figures for the council have showed a small decrease on last year, and this is reflected in the wages paid out. Since April 1 this year the council has paid £2908 in relief wages, compared with £3407 for the corresponding period last year. A 'airly large part of the decrease shown may be attributed to the increase in the number of men put on sustenance. PERSONAL ITEMS FROM WAIMATE Mrs A. F. Rollinson (Christchurch) is spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs A. Williams, Hospital road, Waimate. Miss Mary Trezise, the captain Of a Waimate girl guide group, was presented with an oak clock by the girl guides and rangers recently in honour of her approaching marriage. The District Commissioner (Mrs J. Waldie) introduced Mrs C. G. Holmes, who made the presentation. Miss Trezise suitably replied. Mrs A, ,G. Pitts addressed the monthly meeting of the Waimate branch of the Women’s Division of the Fanners’ Union recently on "Social Hygiene.” Miss M. Barnett presided, and there was a fair attendance.
