WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

ASHLEY

The monthly meeting of the Ashley Women's Institute was held in the school recently. Miss J. Croft presided. It was decided to take Christmas gifts to the value of £2 from the Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League. A gift of a Coronation cake was received from the Ashley Women's Institute (England). Schedules for the combined Ashley-Loburn flower show were distributed, Mr N. Goldsbury (Loburn) gave a talk on plant life and spraying for pests. Competitions resulted as follows: Tumbler of violets: Mrs W. Macahn 1, Mrs G. S. Smith 2, Mrs W. Drake 3. Pickled onions: Miss Z. Beattie I, Mrs A. Baird 2, Mrs H. Pateman 3. Plate of fancy biscuits: Mrs A. E. Loffhagen 1, Mrs H. Pateman 2, Miss Z. Beattie 3. Best bloom in garden: Mrs W. Macann 1, Mrs H. Pateman 2, Mrs W. Fraser 3. The hostesses were Mesdames D. Morrison, A. Baird, and S. Fairbrother. HAPUKU-KAIKOURA Members of tb> Hapuku-Kaikoura Women's Institute held their monthly meeting in the Hapuku Hall. Mrs N R. Comer (president) presided. The winners of the competitions were as follows: Buttonhole, Misses A. Boyd and G. Smith (equal) 1; fancy coat hanger, Mrs H. A. Fairweather 1. Mrs W. A. Hopkins 2; nut loaf, Mrs J D. Boyd 1, Miss G. Smith 2. A competition arranged by Mrs T. Lane was won by Mrs H. A. Fairweather.

COALGATE Mrs Johnston presided at the monthly meeting of the Coalgate Women's Institute, which was held in the Coalgate Masonic Hall. Visitors were welcomed by the president. During the month Mrs Mathews (who
