WOMEN'S EXECUTIVE MEETS . RELIEF ACTIVITIES TO CEASE j ON SEPTEMBER 8 The monthly meeting of the Women's Executive of the Red Cross Society was held yesterday morning in the society's rooms, Hereford Court. Those present were Lady Wigram (chairwoman), Mesdames Herbert Smith, N. McGillivray, C. Wynn-Williams, E. Peate, C. Stringer, J. G. L. Vernon, H. Holland, H. L. Bowker, J. Studholme, and Misses M. Cotterill, and M. Jones. The resignation of Mrs C. J. Treleaven was received with regret. Leave of absence was granted to Mrs J. Stevenson on account of her departure for Australia. ~,,.., Mrs H. Smith reported that for the four weeks of August 38 families, including 101 children, had received 449 garments, and 25 men had. received 72 garments. For the five months from April 1 to August 31. the totals were as follows: 345 families, including 797 children, had received 3491 garments, and 698' garments had been given to 262 men. These figures, Mrs Smith pointed out. showed a very marked falling off in the number of appeals when they were compared with those for the same period last year. It was decided that relief activities in the depot should cease for this year on September 8. Lady Wigram thanked sub-centres for their donations to the Florence Nightingale Fund. Arrangements for the visit of Mr Lewis de Gielgud were nearing finalisation, Lady Wigram announced. The Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, would hold a civic reception for Mr de Gielgud in the Council Chambers at noon on September 27, and would preside at the public meeting to be held in the Radiant Hall the same day. At this public meeting Mr de Gielgud would give an address. He would also broadcast from 3YA. Lady Wigram reminded the executive that besides .being invited to participate in the above programme, they were also invited to attend a meeting of executive members and sub-centre presidents in the Council Chambers on the morning of September 27. This meeting had been arranged in accordance with a wish expressed by Mr de Gielgud to come in direct contact with executive and sub-centre representatives. FAREWELL PARTY Members of the Christchurch Ladies' Amateur Swimming Club held a farewell social in the Builders 1 Chambers in honour of Miss Marie Birchfield, who is leaving for Australia. The president. Mrs W. Brown, presented Miss Birchfield with a handsome writing case as a token of esteem from the members, and wished Miss Birch- ! field good luck'in her i&w sphere. The [evening was spent .with dancing, games, and competitions. Items were given by Miss M. McCormack, Misses and M. Stewart, Miss J. Bowman, and Mrs K. Dr. and Mrs lan Thomson, of Brougham street. Spring bulbs, polyanthi, and japonica were used for decoration, and the prize-winners were Mesdames Allen and Wilson and Miss M. -Harkness.
