The Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft and Mrs Northcroft (Park terrace) are paying a short visit to Mr and Mrs D. C. Macfarlane, Mount Paul, Waiau. Judge Northcroft will leave on Tuesday for the West Coast. Miss Ruth Collins (Clifton, Sumner) left last evening to spend a holiday in Wellington. Miss Peggy Lake (Fendalton), who has been spending several weeks visiting friends in Auckland, will return home next Thursday. Miss Peggy Borgfeldt (Papanui) has left to stay v/ith Miss Joyce Cran, Bayfields. Nurse E. Double will leave tonight for Wellington, where she will spend a few days before proceeding to Sydney with Mr and Mrs Arthur Pascoe and family. Nurse Double expects'to be in Sydney for about 12 months before returning to New Zealand. Miss Ursula Calson has resigned her position with the Canterbury (N.Z.) Seed Company, Ltd., to join the staff of the National Commercial Broadcasting Service. Miss Marjorie Smith (Ashburton) is spending a holiday with Mrs Alex Shaw, Riccarton. Miss Iris Weston (Fairfield avenue) will leave this evening for Auckland, where she will attend the New Zealand basketball tournament. Later she will visit friends and relations, in Hamilton and Wellington. Mrs C. E. Beeby (Wellington) is visiting Christchurch, and is at present the guest of Mrs Walter B. Harris (Merivale). Mrs H. Dunlop (Invercargill) is the guest of Mrs F. Free, Marshland road. Miss Antoinette Wilder (Hawke's Bay), who has been visiting Christchurch, is now the guest of Miss Georgette Handyside, Lower Hutt. Dr. and Mrs D. B. Macleod (Cashmere Hills) are spending a holiday at Medbury, North Canterbury. Miss A. Edwards returned to New Zealand by the Arawa in July, and after spending a month in Auckland has now arrived in Christchurch, where she intends to remain for three months. Mr and Mrs Winston Rhodes (Rugby street) are spending a holiday at Hapuku, Kaikoura. Mrs J. S. Sprott and family (Pendarves) are spending a holiday at Sumner. Miss Brenda Smith (Richmond Hill, Sumner) is visiting Mrs J. Finch, Dunedin. I Miss Dorothy, M. Neal, wVvo recently returned from the United Igtates, left yesterday morning for Dunedin, when she will take charge of the children's library on September 1. , |( An enjoyable : y ( pung people's dance organised* book stall an<s bran tub convfe&ers and assistants was held in St Peter's Parish Hall, Akaroa, when there was a good attendance. The music for the dancing was played by Mesdames I. Pilkington and G. A. E. Le Lievrc, and an extra by Mr K. Swainson. Miss I. Mahon was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Dorothy Armstrong and Mr T. Henning and a lucky spot waltz by Misses Coral Phillips and Fay Manson. Members of the Medbury Old Boys' Association are holding their annual dance in the Winter Garden on Friday next, September 3, the eve of the test football match. The committee, which is very enthusiastic, expects many guests from the country, and is confident that the dance will be one of the most important social events of the season.

An enjoyable progressive bridge party was given by Mr and Mrs J. E. Maxwell, Akaroa, in aid of the Christchurch Boys' High School Assembly Hall fund, for which branches of the Old Boys' Association are working. Mr C. B. Arnold won the prize for the highest score. Those present were Mr and Mrs J. E. Maxwell, Mr and Mrs W. E. M. Jacobson, Mrs E. Longden, Miss E. Jacobson, Dr. W. J. Edginton, and Mr C. B. Arnold. A cablegram has been received from Miss Tsai Kwei, national secretary of the Young Women's Christian Association in China, announcing the safety of Miss A. M. Moncrieff, who represents the New Zealand Young Women's Christian Association on the staff of the national organisation in CKna. Miss Moncrieff is well known in New Zealand, being a graduate of Victoria College University, Wellington, and having held the office of travelling secretary to the New Zealand Student Christian Movement, and having been on the teaching staff of several schools in the Dominion. Miss Moncrieff was planning to take her holiday in August, and it is thought that she may have been absent from Shanghai when the hostilities began.
