LEASING OF GROWN LANDS

Shorter Tenancies Not Favoured

(press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, August 26. The Minister for Lands is to be asked ;o instruct Commissioners of Crown Lands to discontinue as far as possible the practice of letting vacant Crown sections on short tenancies of three months or less. At the conference of the New Zealand Counties Association it was said that tenants for terms of three months or less were legally exempt from rates, yet were users of the roads,, and in practice tenancies frequently went on from month to month for quite long periods. Longer tenancies, even of six months, would give tenants an inducement to keep ragwort in check, it was contended.
